Plastic Coated Construction Zone

This post was imported from a blog called Contemporation where Amy and I wrote about the renovation of our 80’s contemporary home in Atlanta. That blog is no more but I wanted the content to live on.

Since our window order was delayed until early December, we decided to push the start date for Phase Three until after Thanksgiving. We originally planned to spend the holiday here preparing for construction, but that all changed when my mom passed away on November 20th. We quickly packed some clothes, the baby and our cat in the SUV and rushed to Florida to be with family.  It was a hard couple of weeks but what was going to be a lonely 4 day weekend at home for Amy, Adelyn and I turned out to be some great family time. The day after Thanksgiving, Amy and I were talking about the drive back, the long list of things we needed to move before work began and the challenges of having a cat, a toddler and a pregnant momma in a construction zone when we came up with an idea. What if I came back alone while Amy, the baby and the cat stayed with family in Florida until after Christmas?

It’d be warmer, way less dusty and I’d be at work on the weekdays anyway, so I returned alone on Saturday and spent all day Sunday clearing out all the construction areas. I met with our contractor again on Monday and when I got home from work today, this is what I found.

We survived the addition project just fine with Adelyn last year, but she was barely crawling then. Seeing all the floor covering and drop cloths when I got home today reminded me just how dirty and dangerous it would have been here with a wild toddler on the loose. It’s still going to be tough for me to deal with this mess on weeknights and weekends and I already miss my girls like crazy but I’m glad they’re safe in Florida. Despite all this craziness, I’m still excited to see this project started. It’s been a long time since we moved into this mess of a house and I can’t wait to see it transformed.
